Department of Energy Report on Evaluating U.S. Grid Reliability and Security

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Report on Grid Reliability and Security finds that the nation’s current energy path is unsustainable. With 104 GW (gigawatt) of firm generation expected to retire by 2030 and limited new capacity to replace it, the risk of power outages could rise dramatically. Of 154 GW of new projects in development, only 19 GW can provide reliable, around-the-clock power. The DOE emphasizes the need for new strategies to strengthen grid reliability, including better modeling of outage duration, seasonal demand, and regional interconnections.
