Safety Through Compliance with Evelyn Velez,
NERC Document Control Analyst
Ensuring Compliance and Public Safety
At the heart of Lake Worth Beach Electric Utilities is a commitment to safety, reliability and federal compliance, and standing firmly with that mission is Evelyn Velez, NERC Document Control Analyst. Evelyn’s role may be behind the scenes, but her work ensures that the lights stay on, and the city stays clear of costly penalties.
In Evelyn’s own words, her job is “coordinating document evidence for governing agencies upon request.” These agencies, NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation), SERC (Southeastern Electric Reliability Corporation), and FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission), are federal entities that enforce the reliability and safety of electric power across the United States.
Her work ensures that Lake Worth Beach Electric Utilities comply with strict regulations that exist to protect the public. Failure to meet these standards can result in steep fines, up to a million dollars per incident. “I make sure we are always compliant with federal guidelines,” Evelyn shares. “It’s all part of public safety.”
No two days are the same. “Everything is event-driven based on governing agencies’ requirements,” Evelyn explains. Her tasks can range from documentation audits to helping lead large-scale drills. One of her proudest accomplishments was helping coordinate the annual Spill Prevention Drill, which she calls a “huge success.”
Leadership and Dedication Beyond Work
Evelyn serves in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer for 14 years now. She credits her military experience for teaching her patience, structure, and attention to detail her current role at Lake Worth Beach demands. In her free time, she is a mom and acts as her daughter’s Girl Scout troop leader. “I’m a mamacita,” she laughs.
Her advice to those interested in compliance or document control, “You need strong skills with Excel, the ability to prioritize, and to be able to handle multiple event-driven projects at once.”
Evelyn pointed out that there’s an entire team working diligently to maintain electric reliability in Lake Worth Beach. “A lot of our work goes unnoticed,” she says, “but it’s essential.”
As a NERC Document Control Analyst, U.S Navy Chief Petty Officer, Girl Scout troop leader, and mom, Evelyn Velez is an essential part of the Lake Worth Beach Electric Utilities team, and a shining example of excellence behind the scenes.
