Keep Balloons Grounded to Keep the Lights On

A balloon release may seem like a harmless way to celebrate a special occasion, but once released, balloons can wander for miles and lead to serious hazards for electric utilities, wildlife, and the environment.

Recently, balloons became tangled in Lake Worth Beach Electric Utilities’ power lines, causing a power outage for some residents. Thanks to the quick response of our crews, power was restored safely and efficiently. While outages like this are often resolved quickly, they are entirely preventable.

Metallic (Mylar) balloons are especially dangerous because they conduct electricity. When they encounter overhead power lines or electrical equipment, they can cause short circuits, equipment damage, and even service interruptions. Be wary of latex balloons as well, as they can also become entangled in utility infrastructure, resulting in maintenance issues.

Beyond the impact on our electric system, released balloons pose a significant threat to Florida’s wildlife and coastal ecosystems. Sea turtles, dolphins, birds, and other marine animals often mistake deflated balloons and balloon fragments for food. When ingested, balloons can block an animal’s digestive system, leading to starvation, internal injuries, or death. Balloon ribbons can also entangle wildlife, restricting movement.

You can help keep our community safe by celebrating responsibly. Instead of releasing balloons outdoors, pop them yourself and throw them in the trash. You can also consider environmentally friendly alternatives such as bubbles, ribbon wands, or reusable decorations.

By keeping balloons grounded, you’re helping Lake Worth Beach and keeping your power on!
